  • Stephen Lawson PhD is a Director at Rekon Group Pty Ltd, bringing a wealth of experience from over three decades in consulting, mining, construction, education, chemical processing, and multi-commodity sectors including gold, copper, coal, iron ore, oil, and gas. His extensive career spans across America, Indonesia, Africa, and Australasia, showcasing his ability to drive organisational transformations and manage large capital projects effectively.
  • Stephen’s tenure at Newmont Mining Corporation from 2021 to 2023 as Vice President of Productivity underscores his capability in strategic resource management and production planning. He successfully delivered significant productivity improvements and cost savings, with achievements including a record in gold and copper production and major capital projects on budget. His role involved overseeing the technical, commercial, and human performance aspects of Newmont’s operations, demonstrating his comprehensive knowledge and leadership in the industry.
  • Before his role at Newmont, Stephen held various senior positions at Rio Tinto from 2013 to 2021, where he was instrumental in strategic production planning, resource development, and integrated operations. As General Manager for Strategic Planning, he led deep analyses and strategic reviews, shaping the company’s operational philosophy and project strategies. His leadership in dynamic scheduling and integrated production planning optimised value across the supply chain, maintaining Rio Tinto’s market position and achieving significant operational milestones.
  • Stephen’s career also includes notable roles such as Global Safety & Risk Advisor at Newmont Mining Corporation, Principal Advisor at Rio Tinto USA, and Safety Case and Risk Manager at Clough Engineering. His broad experience in risk management, safety, operational planning, and stakeholder relations highlights his versatility and expertise in managing complex projects and diverse teams.
  • Educationally, Stephen holds a PhD in Mine Engineering from the University of Queensland, a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management from the University of Ballarat, a Mining Engineering degree from Ballarat University, and a Bachelor of Science with a major in Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene from Curtin University. He is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, further underscoring his commitment to excellence and professional development.
